  • Michael Jackson is Top Selling Artist of 2009

Posted by Sam on 20th July 2009 in Michael Jackson, Top Music Chart

We’ve only just passed the middle of the year but it looks like Michael Jackson may posthumously become 2009’s top selling artist. Since the King of Pop’s sudden death, the singer’s record sales have skyrocketed. According to industry website Hits Daily Double, Sony Music has shipped over 8 million CDs globally since Michael died. Mind you, that count still doesn’t include downloads. Prior to Michael’s death, Taylor Swift’s ‘Fearless’ dominated the charts. And the King is sure to live on as there will certainly be “repackaged titles, possibly some previously unreleased material and the DVDs of the concert rehearsals” to follow.

Jamie Spear’s hard work has really paid off because not only did Britney make a comeback, she is even better than ever. The recovered pop star’s song ‘Circus’ has hit the number 1 spot on the Top 40 radio charts, giving the singer her fifth number 1 single overall. In addition to ‘Circus’, ‘Womanizer’ and ‘If You Seek Amy’ are also in the Top 40. Britney’s fifth album ‘Circus’, which debuted at number 1, is also the singer’s fifth number 1 debut which makes her the first female artist to score 5 number 1 debut albums. Congratulations to her! She deserves it after all that hard work.

    Kelly Clarkson Breaks Record

Posted by Sam on 3rd February 2009 in Billboard, Hit Song, Kelly Clarkson, Top Music Chart

Women are totally ruling the music industry this year! Kelly Clarkson has made history on this week’s Billboard Hot 100 with her new single becoming the largest jump to the top spot in the chart’s 50-year history. The original American Idol’s ‘My Life Would Suck Without You’ went from number 97 to number 1 after selling over 280,000 downloads on its first week of release in the US. This is the second time she has set this record jump to number 1. Back in October 2002, Kelly’s victory song ‘A Moment Like This’ went from number 52 to number 1. Kelly just snatched back her title from its latest holder Britney Spears. Brit’s ‘Womanizer’ went from number 96 to number 1 last year.

    Miley Cyrus is Number 1

Posted by Sam on 30th July 2008 in Mariah Carey, Miley Cyrus, Records Sale, Top Music Chart

She better enjoy all the glory while she’s on top because her days as the new sensation are numbered. I doubt she’s going to have staying power but as of right now, Miley Cyrus has the #1 album in America. The Disney skank’s new record ‘Breakout’ sold 371,000 copies this past week which makes it the second biggest debut by a female artist this year. She only came in behind Mariah Carey’s first week sales of 463,000 for ‘E=MC2’ in April. Congratulations go out to Miley. I hope you don’t blow it all on a new camera to take even more skanky pictures of yourself.

Rock Band 10 Years landed a Top 15 debut on Billboard

    10-years-cd-cover.jpg

Universal Republic Records’ rock band 10 Years landed a Top 15 debut on Billboard’s Top Album chart this week, coming in at #12 with their new album Division. The new CD also grabbed the top spot on iTunes coveted rock page and currently sits at #7 on the Top Albums. It also garnered the #1 spot on the Top Hard Music Chart, #2 on the Top Alternative Album Chart and #3 on the Top Current Rock Album Chart rallied by their soaring hit single “Beautiful.” The single was launched at radio in early February and was the #1 Most Added single at Alternative and Active Rock radio.

The video for the new single has also garnered wide acclaim, with the clip taking a swipe at both celebrities and paparazzi in the current Gotcha game of celebrity journalism. 10 Years has also earned a place on one of 2008’s most anticipated summer tours, joining mega-rockers Linkin Park on their 5th annual rollout of the Projekt Revolution tour, which kicks off on July 16 at the Tweeter Center in Boston, MA. 10 Years will share the Revolution stage with multiple other bands on the raucous trek, including metal icons Atreyu, Hawthorne Heights, and Armor For Sleep. The 24 city trek hits multiple major U.S. cities in July and August, including New York City on July 22, Washington DC on July 27, Atlanta on August 3, and Chicago on August 16, winding up in Houston Texas on August 24 for the final Projekt Revolution event at the Cynthia woods Mitchell Pavilion.

Critics have cited no let-down in the momentum10 Years established with the across-the-board fan response they received with their previous album The Autumn Effect, which spawned the hits “Wasteland” and “Through The Iris.” “Wasteland” was hailed by the rock, video, and digital world as one of the decade’s breakthrough rock singles, setting career highs for the band as it reigned for more than a year on the rock charts. The song notched the #4 spot on the year-end Active Rock chart, and pulled off a hat-trick of #1 citations at Active Rock, Billboard’s Modern Rock chart, and in the Alternative Rock format.

The new album, Division, was produced by acclaimed production veteran Rick Parasher (Pearl Jam, Nickelback, Soundgarden. Rob Zombie, among others), and recorded during what the band
has described as ‘an intense creative process.’ Songs on Division include “Just Can’t Win,” “Drug of Choice,” “11:00AM (Daydreamer),” and “Focus,” among others. The latter song was co-written by guitarist Dean DeLeo of Stone Temple Pilots’ fame.

Formed in 2002, members of 10 Years are longtime friends, gaining notoriety with their independent release Killing All That holds You, and signing on with Universal Records in 2005.

    Duffy begs for mercy

Posted by Sam on 14th March 2008 in Concert Gig, Music Video, New Single, R.E.M., Top Music Chart

    duffy-ocean.jpg

Duffy may be a double chart-topper in the UK but she’s still completely unknown in the US. So much so that despite stamping her feet the pretty star was refused entry to R.E.M.’s tiny South By Southwest show in Texas.

The veteran rockers played to their smallest audience for more than a decade at Stubb’s Bar-B-Q in Austin, on Wednesday and the Welsh songbird was determined to see them. But unimpressed door staff didn’t recognise her and sent her packing despite her pleading to be let in.

In a bid to build her profile Stateside the soul star has re-shot the video to her No1 single Mercy. The original promo takes place in a 1970s northern soul club and record label bosses feared the US audience wouldn’t get the reference.

So they’ve shelled out thousands for a brand-spanking new video that should set her well on the way to stardom across the pond.

    Duffy is gone solo

Posted by Sam on 10th March 2008 in Debut Album, Duffy, Records Sale, Top Music Chart

    duffy.jpg

Chart-topper Duffy has revealed she went solo because all the peoples she worked with kept trying to pull her.

The sexy songstress will complete the double tomorrow when debut album Rockferry joins single Mercy at the top of the chart.

And I can reveal the soulful star has always been a popular young lady. She has told how she was forced to go it alone as she was fed up of fleeing attention from male bandmates and producers.

Duffy said: “I was collaborating with a lot of people. But every band I got into it was like I had a boyfriend. Every producer wanted to marry me or wanted to be in a duet. I was always running away from something. So I thought, just sing and stay away from the politics. And then I was discovered.”

That was certainly a wise move. Her brilliant debut album is set to shift around 180,000 copies in a week. That can be enough to get you a No1 in the States and it is heading towards the top five fastest-selling UK debuts. On Thursday she celebrated with a mesmerising performance at Bush Hall, West London.

The biggest cheer of the night was for the enchanting Stepping Stone, a future smash hit.

And Duffy revealed a secret heartache behind the track — it is directly aimed at a mystery man from her past. The Welsh singer said the song has some “revenge in it”, adding: “I wrote it about when I fell in love for the first and only time. But I didn’t have the balls to tell him. He still doesn’t know this is about him.”

    Kylie Minogue Sells Out

    Kylie Minogue Sells Out

Kylie Minogue is a sell out – in a good way. The Australian singer sold out all eight of her UK shows in less than two hours which prompted promoters to add another seven UK shows to her schedule. Tickets went on sale at 9AM on Monday for the eight original scheduled shows and by 10AM the promoter added the extra shows to meet the demand.

Kylie has a lot to party for apart from that. Her new album ‘X’ is #1 in Australia and #4 in the UK during its first week of release. She has also agreed to perform at the Brit Awards in February which will be hosted by Sharon and Ozzy Osbourne.
